What is a Future?
So if we're going to focus on futures, it makes sense to define what a future is. Simply put, a future is a standardized, transferable, exchange-traded contract which requires the delivery of a commodity, bond, currency, or stock index, at a specified price, on a specified future date. With futures trading, there is risk for both the holder and the seller in a futures contract. Futures trading is also a zero-sum game, in which the dollars lost by one party equals the dollars gained by the other. Futures contracts, appropriately enough, focus on the future, since they are a promise to make a given transaction at a later date. The date on which the transaction will be made is named in the futures contract. Futures also have a margin requirement that needs to be paid daily. Futures contracts are closed when the arranged date arrives and the transaction focused on by the futures contract is fulfilled.
